Choosing CIMA®

1. What are the careers possible after the CIMA® qualification?

Dual specialization in investment & management accounting is ideal for professionals who wish to diversify their career options through one qualification. CIMA® from United States prepares ambitious professionals for TWO high-growth careers – one, as management accountants in global transnational corporations across industries; and another as investment accountants in leading brokerage and asset management firms that mange billions of dollars of investment portfolios of client organizations. While the management accounting specialization in the CIMA® qualification focuses on the competencies and technical knowledge required for management accounting practice in all classes and categories of global organizations and transnational corporations; the investment accounting specialization in CIMA® prepares professionals for mastering and minding the accounting, analysis and reportage of investment transactions, returns, gains and losses.

2. Is investment & management accounting basically management accounting plus something?

Yes. Investment & management accounting is ACMA’s powerfully eclectic professional specialization that blends competencies in management accounting as well as investment accounting and is rooted to a strong understanding of the strategy, models, processes and environments of business and management globally in the 21st century. While management accountants are in great demand in large organizations cutting across industries; Investment accountants are critically needed by large business and non-business organizations that invest the idle part of their reserves in equity and debt. Investment Accountants are needed, of course in large brokerage firms, asset management firms, investment banks and portfolio management firms.

3. How is management accounting different from financial and cost accounting?

The biggest difference is in the way and where the output of management accountants, cost accountants and financial accountants impact organizations. Management accounting is directly related to providing strategic mechanisms, measures, metrics, financial insights, data and information to managers to take optimal decisions on business continuity; new market entry; diversification; acquisitions; new product introduction, and even restructuring and reengineering. Cost accountants, on the other hand, are limited to impacting the supply chain pieces, whereas financial accountants primarily work for external stakeholders.

4. Does the CIMA® program include the basics of accounting for those who are not exposed to the discipline?

Yes. Not only accounting, but also other connected disciplines too. For more details, please click here.

5. What is Investment Accounting and how is it different from other forms of accounting?

An investment accountant differs from regular accountants, who work to monitor and handle finances for individuals, businesses, and companies. Investment accountants, on the other hand, are super-specialized for working primarily in brokerage and asset management firms, and companies/ organizations that have invested a sizable part of their reserves in stocks, bonds, futures, ETF, derivatives and currencies. An investment accountant records, monitors and manages the transactions related to these investments. Investment accountants also work in specialist advisory, consulting and asset research firms that advise asset managers and brokerage houses.

6. How is CIMA® qualification different from other management accounting certifications?

The single biggest difference is the double specialization in management accounting as well as investment accounting embedded in one qualification! CIMA® program addresses the knowledge and qualification needs of professionals working in, or intending to work in global organizations and financial intermediaries that have multi-country presence and operations, and have to deal with diverse regulations, tax laws, capital markets, multiple foreign currencies; resource constraints; cultures and the vastly more challenging and uncertain global business environment. CIMA® is currently the only global qualification with dual specializations in investment & management accounting.
